Middle School Science Curriculum

In recent years science curriculums have become of great interest due in part to the strong push for STEM* focused materials. Below is a guide to my own research based curriculum. As with any science curriculum, it is a work in progress or a “living document.” Each table represents a different course. Each course is supposed to be a semester in length and when combined, students take four semesters of concentrated material. This curriculum focuses on three main things. This curriculum has…

  1. A strong Non-Fiction focus. Non-traditional texts, annotations, and applicable articles edited to be grade level appropriate are a focal point of each course.
  2. One strong inquiry based project per course that focuses on critical thinking and the engineering process.
  3. Cross instructional materials. Each course reinforces the others. Concepts from chemistry are integral in all four courses while applications of each subject are prevalent in each of the four course subjects.

Lastly, this curriculum is currently aligned to the 7th and 8th grade Indiana State Science Standards (cir. 2010).
